Custom Soda Can Branding
This project explored the development of a cohesive visual identity through custom pattern systems, created as part of ARTD 251 at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. The focus was on translating abstract geometry and repetition into a structured branding system that could scale across physical products.
I designed a series of modular vector patterns and applied them consistently across soda can designs, balancing visual energy with structure and clarity. The project emphasized rhythm, repetition, and contrast while maintaining coherence across variations, demonstrating how pattern-driven systems can communicate brand identity effectively.

Challenge
Establish a set of original, visually consistent patterns that could function both as standalone compositions and as applied brand graphics.
Balance repetition, symmetry, and geometric structure to create patterns that feel energetic without becoming visually overwhelming.
Adapt flat vector patterns to realistic product mockups while preserving clarity, scale, and visual balance.
Design a system of variations that feel cohesive as a family while remaining distinct across individual applications.
Solution
Pattern Development: Designed three distinct yet interconnected patterns using symmetry and layered geometry, ensuring visual consistency across the system while allowing variation between applications.
Color System: Established a focused palette of cool, saturated blues and purples to create strong contrast, reinforce cohesion, and support a contemporary visual tone.
Brand Application: Applied the pattern system to soda can mockups, refining scale, placement, and rhythm to maintain clarity and impact across multiple variations.
Iteration & Refinement: Iterated between vector construction and 3D mockups to evaluate how the patterns performed on physical forms and adjusted density and composition accordingly.
Impact
Demonstrated how pattern, scale, and repetition can be used intentionally to shape product perception and brand presence.
Resulted in a cohesive visual system that remains consistent across variations while allowing flexibility in application.
Highlighted the effectiveness of non-representational graphics in establishing a recognizable and unified brand identity.
Reinforced the role of structured visual systems as a foundation for scalable brand and product design.
Deliverables
